As a first-time visitor to China, I came with some knowledge of the country’s impressive history and some sense of how Chinese society has evolved in more recent years. My preliminary reading and conversations with those who have made trips to China were certainly helpful. I was encouraged to appreciate how the ancient world stands side-by-side with the advanced world in a stark contrast of old and new. The speed of change also was highlighted for me as some described the advances in infrastructure and technology making China an important partner in commerce and trade. I was not prepared, however, for the extent of urban development propelling, even catapulting, China into economic growth.
